If you are unwell and unable to work, you may need a fit note (sometimes called a sick note) if you are off work for more than 7 days, including weekends and bank holidays. You do not usually need one for 7 days or less.
Fit notes can be issued by a healthcare professional involved in your care, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. They can advise whether you are not fit for work or may be fit for work with support or adjustments.
You should return to work as soon as you feel able. If you recover before the end date on your fit note, you do not need to see a healthcare professional again before returning to work. Speak to your employer about returning early or making reasonable adjustments.
There is no charge for a fit note if you have been off sick for more than 7 days. If your employer asks for evidence during the first 7 days, a healthcare professional may charge a fee, which should normally be paid by your employer.
